A 36-year-old Appleford Drive man is charged with murder after a woman of 88 was found dead in Abingdon on 10 September. Police say there is no wider threat.

A man has been charged with murder after a woman of 88 was found dead at an address on Appleford Drive, Abingdon.

Thames Valley Police named him as Daniel Boore, aged 36, of Appleford Drive, Abingdon. He was charged on Sunday 13 September. He was remanded to appear at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on Monday 14 September (Thames Valley Police, 14 September).

The force’s Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation.

What the police have published

The force has issued three statements. Between them they set out the following:

  • Officers were made aware of an unexplained death at an address on Appleford Drive at around 2.20pm on Thursday 10 September
  • A woman aged 88, who lived on Appleford Drive, was found dead
  • A 36-year-old man from Abingdon was arrested later that day on suspicion of murder
  • The woman was formally identified on Saturday 12 September, and her family released a photograph through the force
  • The man was charged with murder on Sunday 13 September

The first statement was published at 12.24pm on Friday 11 September (Thames Valley Police, 11 September). The identification followed at 9.45am the next day (Thames Valley Police, 12 September).

Specially trained officers are supporting the woman’s family. The force has asked that their privacy is respected.

What the senior investigating officer said

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Brangwin, of the Major Crime Unit, is the senior investigating officer. On Friday he said:

“At this early stage we do not currently believe there is any threat to the wider public as we have made an arrest and we are not looking for anyone else, at this time.”

In the statement announcing the charge on Monday, he said:

“I understand this incident may cause concern in the community. Our neighbourhood officers will remain in the area over the coming days and anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak to a uniformed officer.”

He added a warning about social media:

“Now that a man has been charged, criminal proceedings are active; I would urge people not to speculate online or share information that could prejudice those proceedings.”

What it means for you

Police have said from the first statement that they are not looking for anyone else. Neighbourhood officers are staying in the area for the coming days. If you live nearby and are worried, you can speak to them directly.

The case is now active in the legal sense. That limits what anyone can publish, and it applies to posts in community Facebook groups and WhatsApp chats as much as to newspapers. In practice:

  • do not speculate about what happened or why
  • do not share rumours, photographs or claims about the man charged
  • do not post anything that assumes guilt

Daniel Boore has been charged. He has not been tried, and a charge is an allegation, not a finding of guilt. For that reason we will report only what the police and the courts put on the record.
