A sports camp for ages 5 to 13 at Fitzharrys School, 26 to 30 October: 9am to 3.30pm, extended days 8.30am to 5pm, and the full week for the price of four days.

Children aged 5 to 13 can spend October half term at a sports camp at Fitzharrys School in Abingdon. Elite Youth Sports, a Didcot company, is running its Elite Camps there from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October, and families who book all five days pay for four, which the company puts at 20% off.

The dates match the state school half term in Abingdon, which runs the same Monday to Friday (our October half term page has the school-by-school dates, including the independent schools that break earlier).

What the week involves

Adam Banks, the company’s marketing executive, describes each day as “packed with a mixture of sports, team games, active challenges and creative activities, giving children the chance to try different activities, build confidence, make new friends and, most importantly, have lots of fun during the school holidays.”

The October week has a seasonal twist. “With Halloween-themed activities included during the week, there will be plenty to keep children entertained throughout the half term break,” he writes.

The camp activities page on the company’s website lists the everyday sports, which run from football, dodgeball, benchball and tag rugby to rounders, Kwik Cricket, parachute games and arts and crafts. Children are grouped by age so that abilities are matched. On top of that, each day has what the company calls an “Elite Activity”, something out of the ordinary such as glow in the dark dodgeball, bubble football, laser tag, Nerf wars or soft archery. The company notes that some of those carry age restrictions. Which ones run at Abingdon this half term is not listed in what it sent us.

The five for four offer

The offer applies only when the whole week is booked: “Book all 5 days and pay for just 4! (20% off),” the company says. “Booking the full week gives families great value while securing a full week of activities for their child.”

Its FAQ page adds a separate sibling discount: booking two or more children onto the same camp session takes 5% off the total. Day prices were not in the material sent to us and are shown on the booking site.

Practical details for parents

According to the company’s Elite Camps page, its holiday camps are Ofsted registered, open to children of any ability and accept childcare vouchers. The FAQs say each camp location is registered with a range of voucher providers and the government’s Tax-Free Childcare scheme, and that voucher payments must be made at the time of booking or the place can be cancelled.

Children bring their own packed lunch, snacks and a named, refillable water bottle. The camps are nut free, which the company says includes peanut butter, Nutella and anything labelled “may contain nuts”. A coat is worth packing in late October, and mobile phones are either left with the camp manager or kept in a bag at the owner’s risk.

For children with special educational needs, the FAQs say: “We welcome children of all abilities at Elite Youth Sports and are committed to creating an inclusive, supportive environment.” The company says it is not a specialist SEN provider and asks parents to get in touch before booking, on 01235 415846 or info@eliteyouthsports.co.uk, so the team can plan.
